Residents of Ifa Ikot Idang community in Etoi Clan, Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, have received a major boost in access to clean water following the donation of a solar-powered borehole facility by LG Electronics Nigeria.
The project, commissioned as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, features a 180-foot borehole, a 5,000-litre overhead water tank, and dual 1,440-watt bifacial solar panels designed to provide sustainable and uninterrupted water supply to the community.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Head of Corporate Marketing at LG Electronics Nigeria, Mr. Paul Mba, said the intervention was aimed at addressing critical challenges in water access and energy sustainability.
According to him, the solar-powered system was designed to operate independently of the national electricity grid, ensuring a reliable water supply for residents.
“This intervention reflects our commitment to leveraging technology to tackle real-life challenges in water access, energy sustainability, and community development. The system guarantees a continuous water supply through a sustainable and cost-effective model that will benefit the community for years to come,” Mba said.
Also speaking, Public Relations and CSR Manager at LG Electronics Nigeria, Mr. Moses Osime, described the project as a people-centred initiative that goes beyond infrastructure provision.
“At LG Electronics, we understand the challenges communities like Ifa Ikot Idang face in accessing clean water. This project restores dignity, renews hope, and demonstrates our commitment to meaningful and sustainable development,” he said.
The Village Head of Idang, Idarag Efe-Idiong, Chief Mancus Asuquo Ibanga, expressed gratitude to the company, describing the project as a long-awaited solution to a challenge that had affected residents for years.
“Having clean water close to home has restored dignity to our daily lives, especially for women and children who previously travelled long distances in search of safe drinking water. This project has significantly improved the wellbeing of our people,” he said.
Vice Chairman II of Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio, Aparawa Jimmy Essien, also hailed the initiative, noting that access to clean and sustainable water supply was fundamental to community development, public health and economic growth.
He further commended LG Electronics for the quality and durability associated with its products, describing the borehole project as another demonstration of the company’s commitment to excellence.
Representatives of the community, Mr. and Mrs. Itoro Atakpa, as well as Mr. Udo Ibong, Special Assistant to Governor Umo Eno on Digital Marketing and Social Media, were also recognised for their roles in facilitating the project.
Speaking on behalf of her husband, Mrs. Atakpa said their involvement was motivated by a desire to contribute to the development of their ancestral community and improve the quality of life of residents.
For many beneficiaries, the project marks a significant turning point.
Mrs. Joyce Mbong, a resident, said the availability of clean water within the community would reduce the hardship associated with sourcing water from distant locations.
“Having reliable water right here in our village is life-changing. For years, we spent time and money travelling long distances to get water. This project has brought relief and convenience to every household,” she said.
Traditional rulers and community leaders at the event described the initiative as a model for effective collaboration between private organisations and local communities. They urged other corporate bodies to invest in similar projects, particularly those incorporating renewable energy solutions to ensure long-term sustainability.
The solar-powered borehole project reinforces LG Electronics’ commitment to innovation-driven community development and has brought uninterrupted access to clean water to residents of Ifa Ikot Idang for the first time in many years.
