In a strategic move to fortify climate resilience and environmental consciousness among the youth, the Bayelsa state Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprise in Niger Delta (LIFE-ND) has commenced the establishment of green clubs across selected secondary schools and tertiary institutions in the state.

Speaking at the formation of the club in the Faculty of Social Science, Niger Delta University, Amassoma, the Dean of the faculty Professor N.S. Ekpenyong stated that the social science are at the heart of climate crisis, being that the environmental degradation directly impacts human behaviour, economic stability and social justice.

He said whatever activities undertaken by the club represent hope and stability, pointing out that the initiation will transform the school into a hub for environmental solutions.

“sustainability is no longer a choice but a need for survival, by establishing the green club within our faculty, the future policy maker and social is a clear testament of our commitment in ensuring that our student- the future policy maker and social workers graduates with a greater sense of ecological responsibility,” he stated.

Professor Lawrence Udisi, Bayelsa LIFE – ND Environmental and Climate Change Specialist, lauded the dean’s proactive stance, adding that “the formation of the club is a shift beyond the theoretical classroom learning.”

“The objective is to onboard a generation of environmental ambassador capable of tracking the unique ecological challenges of the state. “

He highlighted the core mandate of the club as follows; community advocacy on environment related issues, tackling deforestation by constantly planting trees within the school environment to combat erosion and improve air quality, and to teach students the concept of waste to wealth and recyclable materials into economic assets.

“By integrating environmental stewardship through LIFE ND intervention, the project ensures that economic gains of today are not lost to the environmental disaster of tomorrow.

“The green club serves as a sustainable exit strategy, ensuring that the youths remain connected to green growth even after the lifespan of the project,” he added.
