The Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, in partnership with Interferry, a global ferry association with consultative status at the International Maritime Organization, has launched a Ferry Safety Development and Mentoring Programme aimed at improving safety and operational standards in the sector.

The initiative, the first of its kind in Africa, is designed to strengthen ferry safety practices, enhance operational efficiency and raise professional standards among operators.

The 18-month programme will feature mentorship from Interferry experts, supported by facilitators drawn from maritime institutions, industry operators and regulatory agencies across Nigeria.

In a statement made available by LASWA Management,  an intake verification exercise was conducted on March 18, 2026, to ensure that applicants met the required eligibility and selection criteria.

A total of 50 participants, including ferry captains, deckhands, marine engineers, technicians, safety officers, compliance professionals and fleet managers, have been selected for the programme.

According to the agency, participants will undergo training in key areas such as ferry design and construction, safety management systems, maritime regulations, and maintenance practices, including preventive and predictive techniques.

The programme, scheduled to commence in May 2026, will adopt a hybrid format comprising self-paced online learning, virtual mentoring and monthly practical sessions.

The official kick-off is slated for Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at LASWA Head Office, Ikoyi.

LASWA said the event would feature an overview of the programme, introduction of mentors and participants, as well as a stakeholder engagement session.

The authority noted that the initiative reflects the Lagos State Government’s commitment to safer waterways and the development of a globally competitive ferry transport system.
