The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Lagos Axis, has paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Fatai Tijani, at the Command Headquarters in Lagos.
The delegation, led by the Chairman of NANS JCC Lagos, Comrade Quadri I. Odewunmi, was accompanied by Students’ Union Government (SUG) Presidents from tertiary institutions across Lagos State.
The visit, according to the association, formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen stakeholder engagement and foster collaboration with key institutions on issues affecting students across the state.
Speaking during the visit, Odewunmi formally introduced the newly-elected executives of the association and congratulated the Police Commissioner on his appointment. He also outlined the leadership’s vision, programmes, and commitment to promoting student welfare, peace, and security in tertiary institutions in Lagos.
The Chairman further highlighted his guiding philosophy, describing a redefined approach to the traditional “3 Cs of Aluta.” While the conventional principle emphasizes consultation, consolidation, and confrontation, Odewunmi noted that his leadership prioritizes consultation, consolidation, and a return to consultation.
According to him, this approach is aimed at fostering dialogue, preventing unnecessary conflict, and promoting sustainable solutions.
He explained that his administration is committed to exhausting all peaceful and diplomatic channels, stressing that even after confrontation, engagement often returns to consultation and consolidation.
However, he maintained that this stance does not imply weakness, adding that the leadership would always stand firmly with students whenever their rights are threatened or they are disenfranchised.
The student body also emphasized its readiness to work closely with security agencies, particularly in advancing student-focused initiatives, advocating for welfare, and ensuring safer campuses.
The NANS leadership further commended the Lagos State Police Command for its responsiveness and professionalism, particularly appreciating the Commissioner’s swift intervention in the recent fatal accident involving a female student of Lagos State University (LASU).
In his response, CP Fatai Tijani welcomed the delegation and praised the cordial relationship between the police and the student community. He stressed the importance of sustained cooperation, mutual respect, and continuous dialogue in maintaining peace and order.
The Police Commissioner further assured the students of the Command’s unwavering commitment to supporting lawful student activities, enhancing public safety, and strengthening collaboration with student leaders across the state.
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both parties reaffirming their commitment to building a safer, more secure, and student-friendly environment in Lagos State.
