Sports teaches some things that can’t be learned in classrooms – Opata

The Director of Studies, Ferscoat International School, Lagos, Pastor Felix Opata, has said students can learn many things by participating in sporting activities which they may not be taught in classrooms.

Opata, who spoke during tbe 13th Biennial Inter-House Sports competition of the school, noted that resilience and unity are some of the virtues sports teaches.

“Sports teaches lessons no classroom alone can provide. On this field, our students learn resilience when they fall and rise again. They learn unity when they run not just for themselves, but for their house. They learn integrity when they compete fairly and celebrate graciously.

“Today, our school field has transformed into more than grass and track lines. It has become a theatre of courage, discipline, teamwork and dreams in motion. Inter-House Sports is not merely about races and trophies. It is about discovering strength you did not know you had and cheering others even as you chase your own victory,” he stated.

Opata appealed to the government to help nurture talents being discovered through such events.
He thanked parents, teachers, students and sponsors for the support, describing any investment in sports as investing in the future of the youths who could make a living as sportsmen and women.

The Chairperson of the occasion, Mrs Adenike Richard-Ojo, said she has been associated with Ferscoat International School for about 18 years.

“I have been associated with the school for about 18 years and I can vouch for their integrity in producing total man in each student. They balance academic activities with sporting activities as we can see. Sports teaches courage and a way to rise when we fall.

“I would call on the government to rise to the occasion of helping to nurture young talents discovered through events like this. Parents should also not discourage their children from taking part in sports. It has become a way to a successful life for many people globally, ” she said.

A former member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, who also served as a local government chairman, Hon. Bisi Yusuf, said the Lagos State government would always support initiatives that would help people make use of their innate talents.

He thanked corporate sponsors who supported the event and called on others to do same.
