The Och’Idoma and Paramount Ruler of the Idoma Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Agaba’idu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji has formally accepted his appointment as the National Patron of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), describing the role as a call to service rather than a mere honour.

The acceptance took place during a courtesy visit by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of SWAN to the Och’Idoma Palace in Otukpo, Benue State, according to a statement issued at the weekend by the Secretary of the Idoma Area Traditional Council (IATC), Mr. Adegbe Uloko.

Receiving the SWAN delegation led by its President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, the monarch expressed gratitude to the Association for the recognition and commended SWAN for its over 60 years of contribution to sports development, youth empowerment and national unity since its establishment in 1964.

The Och’Idoma described sports as a powerful instrument for youth development, social cohesion and nation-building, stressing that the media plays a critical role in shaping values, inspiring excellence and preserving Nigeria’s sporting heritage.

“I accept this appointment not merely as an honour, but as a responsibility to support initiatives that promote unity, discipline and excellence through sports and the media,” the monarch said.

He urged SWAN to intensify its advocacy for grassroots sports development, youth mentorship, ethical journalism and policy reforms that would improve athlete welfare and sports administration in the country.

The royal father also called for closer collaboration between sports journalists and traditional institutions, noting that such partnerships could help mobilise communities, promote peace and harness sports as a tool for positive social engagement.

Earlier, SWAN President said the decision to appoint the Och’Idoma as National Patron was informed by his demonstrated commitment to peace, youth empowerment and national development.

According to him, the Association looks forward to benefiting from the monarch’s wealth of experience, moral authority and leadership in advancing the objectives of SWAN nationwide.

The Association also reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, responsible journalism and the use of sports as a vehicle for positive social change across Nigeria.

The visit climaxed with the formal presentation of the Letter of Appointment to the monarch.
