The National Association of Nigerian Students in Diaspora has urged the Federal Government to urgently honour its financial commitments to Bilateral Education Agreement scholars owed allowances for over one year.
In a statement on Wednesday, the National President of NANS Diaspora, Comrade Juwon Fayomi, said the prolonged delay had subjected Nigerian students studying abroad to severe hardship.
Fayomi said many of the affected scholars had been evicted from their accommodation, while others were struggling to meet basic needs, including food, healthcare and transportation.
He noted that the situation had negatively affected the students’ academic performance and exposed them to emotional and psychological distress.
The NANS Diaspora president recalled that on July 24, 2025, the association’s leadership met with the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, who assured that all outstanding allowances would be paid within three months.
According to him, the minister also stated that although the BEA scheme had been suspended, scholars enrolled before the suspension would receive their full entitlements.
“More than three months after this assurance, nothing has been paid. This failure has worsened the suffering of Nigerian students abroad and damaged the credibility of government commitments,” Fayomi said.
He called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and direct the immediate payment of all outstanding BEA allowances.
Fayomi added that the Renewed Hope Agenda must reflect concrete actions that protect the welfare and dignity of Nigerian students at home and in the diaspora.
He said NANS Diaspora would continue to engage relevant authorities and speak out until all affected scholars received what was rightfully theirs.
