Athlete, US Army serviceman Kelechi Jones crowned Misters of Imo

Nigerian-born athlete and fitness influencer, Kelechi Chiazor Amonu Jones, has been officially appointed as the Mister Imo State delegate for the 2026 edition of the Misters of Nigeria pageant, bringing a compelling story of resilience, discipline and personal transformation to the national stage.

Amonu Jones’ journey has been shaped by early exposure to discipline and adaptability. He began his education at Chosen Seed Nursery and Primary School in Oke-Afa, Isolo, before relocating to Imo State for his secondary education at the Catholic boarding institution, Father Cloonan Memorial Secondary School (FACLOMSS), Emekuku. He spent six years at the school, an experience he credits with building the mental toughness and character that continue to define his life.

Speaking on the appointment, Jones described it as a reflection of his roots and personal growth. “Imo State played a major role in shaping who I am today. Being selected to represent the state on a national platform is an honour and an opportunity to tell a story of resilience, discipline and self-belief,” he said.

After secondary school, Amonu Jones recorded an outstanding score of 306 in the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination and gained admission to study Accounting/Finance at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. However, his academic path took a different turn when his family’s United States Permanent Residency visa, pursued for over 13 years, was approved, leading to their relocation in 2020.

Settling in the United States was not without challenges. Long work hours, cultural adjustment and physical strain tested his resolve. Determined to rebuild himself, Amonu Jones embraced fitness training, a decision that reignited his confidence and sense of purpose. This journey later led him to enlist in the United States Army, where he distinguished himself during basic training, earning multiple awards including a perfect Army Fitness Test score, Sharpshooter Marksmanship, Iron Soldier and Combat Warrior honours. He later attained United States citizenship.

Now based in Seattle, Washington, Jones has earned an Associate Degree and is progressing toward a Bachelor’s degree. He has also carved a niche in sports, excelling as a Defensive End with semi-professional American football team, the Everett Royals, where he was named Rookie of the Year and selected for the All-Star Team in his first season, despite having no prior experience with the sport.

Beyond athletics, Amonu Jones has built a growing influence in the fitness space, using his platform to encourage discipline, self-improvement and positive lifestyle choices among young people.

According to Amonu Jones, the Misters of Nigeria platform aligns with his personal mission. “This is not just about appearance; it is about character, discipline and impact. I want to use this platform to inspire young Nigerians to believe in growth, resilience and the power of self-development,” he stated.

His appointment as Mister Imo 2026 positions him as a strong contender in the forthcoming Misters of Nigeria pageant, where he aims to represent Imo State with pride while projecting a message of empowerment, excellence and continuous self-improvement.
