ABUJA – The Igbo Community Association in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has adopted the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, Obinna Simon, for the chairmanship of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

The AMAC chairmanship election is scheduled to hold in February 2026, with the council regarded as the largest, most developed and most resource-intensive area council in the country, hosting key national institutions including the State House (Aso Villa), the National Assembly, the Supreme Court and the Federal Secretariat Complex.

The decision was announced in Abuja during a media briefing addressed by the association’s President General, Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe.

Ellis-Ezenekwe said the endorsement followed a review of the manifestos and policy proposals submitted by candidates contesting the AMAC chairmanship.

“Following a thorough review of campaign manifestos and policies, we found Obinna Simon’s vision and expertise align with the needs of the diverse communities in the FCT,” he said.

The association said it expects the SDP candidate to represent the interests of residents across the council if elected.

“We are confident that he will be a champion for the rights and interests of all residents in AMAC,” Ellis-Ezenekwe stated.

He added that the group also considered Simon’s positions on community development, social welfare and economic empowerment in reaching its decision.

The association said it plans to mobilise its members in support of the SDP candidate ahead of the election.

“The Igbo Community in Abuja resolves to support and vote for Obinna Simon,” the president general said.
