Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 9th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Nigeria Association of Tour Operators (NATOP) held in Akure, Governor Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Chief Olayide Adelami, highlighted the state’s strategic focus on tourism as a tool for economic growth, job creation, and cultural preservation.

“Tourism remains a vital sector with the potential to create jobs, foster understanding, and drive sustainable growth,” Aiyedatiwa said. “As an administration committed to diversification and prosperity, we will continue to support initiatives that promote our tourism assets, preserve our heritage, and attract global visitors to Ondo State.”

The governor described the tourism industry as a “sleeping economic giant” and called for practical efforts to revitalise it, echoing sentiments shared by stakeholders. He cited examples like Araromi Beach, a 180-kilometre stretch of pristine beachfront, which he said could become a major attraction once the ongoing coastal highway project is completed.

“By the time the coastal road is completed, Araromi Beach will be a prime destination. It is only about 45 minutes from Lagos, and investors should act now before land prices soar,” he noted.

In her remarks, NATOP President, Alhaja Bolaji Mustapha expressed appreciation to the Ondo State Government for hosting the AGM in a location that reflects this year’s theme: Unlocking Nigeria’s Ecotourism Untapped Treasures.

She emphasized the role of tour operators in showcasing Nigeria’s rich natural and cultural assets, particularly at the grassroots level. “We have the responsibility and opportunity to spotlight these treasures, create economic value, and empower tourism entrepreneurs,” she said.

The AGM brought together key players in the tourism sector, including government officials, private investors, and tour operators, to discuss strategies for unlocking the nation’s vast ecotourism potential.
