Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has called on the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) to develop satellite technology that will aid security agencies in tackling insecurity across Nigeria.

The governor made the remarks yesterday during a three-day retreat for NASRDA’s top management staff in Uyo, themed “NASRDA Beyond The Horizon: Building A Resilient Workforce For Space Economy And National Security.”

Represented by his deputy, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, Governor Eno emphasized that the satellites developed by NASRDA could help address challenges such as internet fraud and enhance national security.

He stated, “As our nation grapples with security challenges, satellite technology developed by your organization can assist our security agencies in surveillance, intelligence gathering, and tracking of bandits, kidnappers, and insurgents. Even the menace of internet fraud can be reasonably curbed through NASRDA’s research efforts. This shows how important your agency is to national development.”

Eno further noted that with the rapid advancement of technology globally, NASRDA must work diligently to develop local expertise that will ensure Nigeria’s presence in the global digital and technological space.

He also commended NASRDA’s Director-General, Dr. Matthew Adepoju, for his innovation and professional leadership since taking office.

In a goodwill message, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, urged private sector involvement in space technology development, highlighting the vast opportunities available.

“Our Ministry is proud of NASRDA’s progress despite numerous challenges and is committed to supporting your efforts through policy reforms, talent development, and strategic investment partnerships to unlock the potential of Nigeria’s space ecosystem,” Nnaji said.

Earlier, NASRDA’s Director-General, Dr. Adepoju, explained that the retreat was organized to align top management with the agency’s vision and aspirations. He highlighted NASRDA’s 25-year journey and stressed the importance of cohesive leadership for the organization’s success.

He said, “This retreat is a critical success factor for any organization. When leadership and directors are not aligned in policy implementation, progress is hindered. NASRDA celebrated 25 years in space last year, and as we enter another 25 years, we want to set the future right and ensure our aspirations are clearly understood by all strategic leaders.”
