AFWL, LSE fashion masterclass kicks off in London

The highly anticipated Economics of Fashion Executive Masterclass, presented by Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) in collaboration with LSE Enterprise, began yesterday at the London School of Economics and continues through tomorrow Friday, May 23.

Launched as part of AFWL’s 15th anniversary celebrations, the two-day executive programme gathers African fashion designers, brand founders, stylists, and industry executives for an intensive learning experience focused on global economics, sustainability, policy, marketing, and financing strategies for fashion businesses.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Bola Obileye, AFWL’s Creative Director and Head of Education, said:
“Our goal is to empower African creatives with the tools to not just survive but lead in the global fashion economy. This masterclass is our way of investing in Africa’s fashion future — bold, competitive, and economically sustainable.”

The curriculum, designed by LSE Enterprise and curated by AFWL, aims to blend academic excellence with real-world strategy, enable African fashion stakeholders build resilient and scalable business models, while strengthening Africa’s position as a leading contributor to the global fashion chain.

Modules include:

*Global Fashion Economics- understanding global fashion industry drivers, trends, and digital tools.

*Policy & Marketing Strategy: Exploring African/global policies and strategic brand positioning.

*Sustainable Fashion: Designing for durability, ethics, and eco-efficiency.

  • Entrepreneurship & Financing: Scaling and sustaining African fashion brands globally

HRM Queen Ronke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi, founder of Africa Fashion Week London, emphasized the broader vision:
“Fifteen years ago, we started with the dream of giving African fashion a global platform. Today, we’re going further — not just showcasing creativity, but building the business acumen that will drive long-term impact and position Africa as a fashion powerhouse.

“Africa Fashion Week London continues its legacy of leading the way in promoting and showcasing Africa in style.” she says.
The masterclass is hosted at LSE’s Centre Building on Houghton Street, and has drawn participants from across Africa, Europe, and the diaspora.
