The South-South region of Nigeria has been advised to promote the legacy of late Edwin Clark as a way of ensuring that the unity and peace he fought for is sustained.
The advice was given at the just concluded Ijaw National Congress to commemorate the 2025 International Ijaw Day.
In an interview with Vanguard, former Commissioner of Economic, Planning and Budget, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor of Lagos State Government, Samuel Egube, disclosed that late Edwin Clark was a voice that speaks directly to power, adding that, represented the Nigerian people in all ramifications.
“Late Clark represented the Ijaw people, and he was a detribalized Nigerian and someone that we have respected since we were children.
“He has remained steadfast, healthy until his death. He was an example to many of us to follow in the development of our nation whether we hold public office or not. This is our country and we must watch it grow and that was what late sir Edwin Clark stood for”, he said.
He further explained that the Ijaw people have been united and peaceful; they have not forgotten their culture. We commend the Lagos State Government for accommodating many people to be able to contribute to the economy of the state.
I am delighted to see that Ijaws are showcasing their culture, food, and dance to commemorate the national day.
When it comes to peaceful coexistence, it is mandatory that every tribe consider the peace of one another, it is our responsibility to pursue peace, good citizenship, and environmental protection in favour of all Nigerians especially the South -South.
In her contribution, Princess Churchere Komonibo, said, the Ijaws have the potential to grow. “We have the potential to showcase who we are to the world. We are intelligent and people with culture.
“When we work as a team we can achieve so much for the Ijaw nation and Nigeria at large. Another area is that we should encourage one another.
“We should encourage our youths to explore the use of Artificial Intelligence. They must be technology savvy. AI is the way to go and our youths must explore it to the latter. We want our youths to be engaged and responsible financially. We do not want them to be idle.
In his reaction, INC Chairman Lagos State chapter, Comrade Tonye Leonard, reiterated that, “No man is an island adding that every man needs the help of another to stand. We must help ourselves. It is very important that we walk together to be able to progress together, so that there will be peace and unity in our midst.
