Sheikh Sholagberu urges unity among Islamic scholars

Abuja — The Grand Sheikh of Ilorin Emirate, Imam Sheikh Dr. Abdul Kadir Al Salman Sholagberu, has called for greater unity among Islamic scholars and preachers, emphasizing the need to overcome doctrinal differences and focus on shared goals.

Speaking during his inaugural sermon as one of the Chief Imams of the National Mosque in Abuja over the weekend, Sholagberu stressed that religious discourse should be rooted in wisdom, tolerance, and mutual respect rather than conflict and rivalry.

He expressed concerns over the growing trend of disputes among scholars, warning that such quarrels—often over non-essential matters of faith—have caused unnecessary divisions within the Muslim community.

The Sheikh lamented the misuse of religious debates, which have become platforms for public accusations instead of avenues for guiding the Ummah. He criticized the tendency of some religious leaders to challenge and discredit one another over differences in jurisprudence and practices, noting that these disputes weaken the Muslim community, especially when aired on social media.

The Malami Ubandoma of Ilorin Emirate, who also spoke during the event, echoed similar concerns. He urged religious leaders to emulate the example set by early Islamic scholars, who maintained unity despite differing interpretations.

Ahead of the upcoming Ramadan, Sholagberu called on Muslims to purify their hearts, set aside grudges, and embrace the spirit of brotherhood. He emphasized that the strength of the Muslim community lies in its unity.

The Sheikh encouraged scholars to practice forgiveness, learn from one another, and foster harmonious relationships.

“It is painful to witness scholars and preachers engaging in public quarrels over matters that are not fundamental to our faith,” he said.

“Instead of uniting to guide the Ummah, some scholars have turned religious discourse into a battlefield of accusations and counter-accusations. This only serves to weaken the Muslim community.”

He further urged scholars to practice tolerance and follow the example of early Islamic scholars.

“The great scholars of Islam differed in their interpretations but never allowed their differences to breed hostility. We must learn from them. Our strength lies in our unity.”
