A coalition of 45 election observer groups accredited by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the upcoming Ondo State governorship election has called on the commission to uphold fairness and meet Nigerians’ expectations in conducting a credible election.

Speaking at a press conference in Akure, the coalition’s leader, Comrade Fidelis Nweke, emphasized the importance of a neutral stance from INEC, stating, “INEC, under Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, must ensure a level playing field for all political parties and demonstrate its commitment to impartiality.”

Nweke underscored that in a democratic society, it is essential for elections to adhere to established rules and guidelines to facilitate a smooth and lawful transfer of power. “The accreditation of civil society organizations to observe elections is meant to assess the compliance of INEC, political parties, and security agencies with constitutional and electoral laws,” he explained.

He further noted that “manipulating the electoral process undermines democracy by imposing candidates against the electorate’s wishes. Such actions are anti-democratic and violate civilized standards.”

Reflecting on election-related violence, Nweke recalled that an estimated 626 Nigerians lost their lives during the 2019 elections, with another 109 fatalities leading up to the 2023 general elections. However, he praised Ondo State citizens for their exemplary conduct in previous elections, describing this election as another opportunity to strengthen democracy and the rule of law.

Nweke urged politicians to demonstrate respect for public office by maintaining decorum and prioritizing the public good, stressing that INEC must visibly uphold fairness throughout the electoral process to gain public trust.
