The Idoma Area Traditional Council, IATC, has barred the formation and inauguration of a new volunteer guard in Otukpo Local Government Area, LGA, of Benue State warning that anything done in contravention of the order could attract legal implication.

This was contained in a statement issued Tuesday in Otukpo and signed by the Ad’Otukpo, HRH Onuh Abudu on behalf of the His Royal Majesty, Och’Idoma, Dr. John Elaigwu.

The Council pointed out that the decision became necessay following a recent  announcement on a local radio regarding the purported inauguration of a Volunteer Guard in Sabon Gari, Ward 3, Otukpo, under the directive of an Otukpo chief.

Part of the statement read, “the Council wishes to clarify and emphasize that the said Volunteer Guard was officially disbanded four years ago during the administration of Chief George Ali, the then Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Council.

“It is essential to reiterate that, following the disbandment, the government issued a directive stating that no individual or group has the authority to establish any security outfit outside those officially constituted by the government.

“This measure was taken to ensure the safety and coherence of security operations within the state, maintaining alignment with the laws and regulations governing the establishment of such bodies.

“The IATC therefore, advises members of the general public particularly, the sarbo-geri people to remain vigilant and to distance themselves from any activities or operations associated with the aforementioned Volunteer Guard or any similar unauthorized body.

“Participation or association with any group that contravenes this directive may result in legal consequences, as the establishment and operation of such entities are considered unlawful.

“This notice serves as a reminder of the Council’s commitment to upholding law and order and protecting the community from potential disruptions or unauthorized security activities.”
