Noah Lyles secured a narrow victory at the Paris Olympics on Sunday, ending a two-decade-long wait for the United States to regain the coveted sprinting title.
Lyles triumphed in the tightest Olympic 100m finish in modern history, with just five-thousandths of a second separating him from Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson.
Both athletes were recorded with a rounded-up time of 9.79 seconds, but Lyles’ time of 9.790 seconds edged out Thompson’s 9.789 seconds by the crucial margin.
His win ranks one of the highest in Olympics history, behind Usain Bolt’s record of 9.63 seconds at the London 2012 Olympics.
