The House of Representatives has initiated a move to get the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Eket Station, which Akwa Ibom State abandoned 17 years ago, to open for full operations.

The move formed part of resolutions adopted during Thursday’s plenary over a motion by the member representing Eket/ONNA/Esit Eket/Ibeno Federal Constituency, Okpolupm Etteh, on the need to let the station meet set objectives.

The House also urged NTA to ensure that the television channel with broad reach commences full digital operations next year.

At the plenary presided over by Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker, Hon Etteh, emphasised that “The House is aware that the Federal Government invested much funds in constructing and equipping the NTA Eket Television Station technically to commence broadcasting.

“Sadly, this investment, which carried out testing over 17 years ago, has been abandoned and allowed to be overrun with weeds, grass, and crawling animals.”

He noted that the operation of the Eket Television Station would enhance economic development and create job opportunities in that federal constituency.

The Reps member added that Akwa Ibom people, especially his constituents, have appealed to relevant authorities to ensure the station starts full operation for a broader reach in informing and educating the people.

In its resolution, the House mandated her Committee on Appropriation, Information, National Orientation, and Values to reach out, take the necessary actions, and report back within four weeks for further resolution.

The House also prayed for NTA to live up to its mandate and “provide excellent service worldwide and project the true African perspective.”
