Why Nigeria must embrace One Health Approach  – Expert

By Miftaudeen Raji

A leading expert in microbiology, Oluwamayowa Akinsuyi emphasized on the need for Nigeria to embrace the One Health Approach.

Akinsuyi shared his insight on the One Health Approach in an interview on Wednesday.

The expert is currently fostering significant advancements in the field through his pioneering research on infectious diseases, particularly focusing on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the One Health approach in Nigeria.

His extensive expertise is demonstrated through groundbreaking research that has significantly influenced public health strategies and policies.

Notably, Akinsuyi’s work on vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus in Nigeria has revealed the alarming prevalence of this drug-resistant bacterium in healthcare settings, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced surveillance and infection control measure.

In this comprehensive study, Akinsuyi and his team conducted extensive surveillance across multiple healthcare facilities to assess the spread and impact of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE).

Their findings indicated a higher than expected prevalence of VRE, particularly in hospital environments where antibiotics are frequently used. This discovery has prompted a reevaluation of current infection control protocols and emphasized the necessity for stringent hygiene practices in medical institutions.

In his recent paper titled “One Health approach, a solution to reducing the menace of multidrug-resistant bacteria and zoonoses from domesticated animals in Nigeria,” Akinsuyi, meticulously explored the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.

This work is pivotal in advocating for a unified strategy to combat the spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria and zoonoses from domesticated animals.

Akinsuyi stated, “Antimicrobial resistance knows no boundaries. It is imperative that we adopt a holistic approach that considers the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. Our research demonstrates that by embracing the principles of One Health, we can develop effective strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance and safeguard the health of both current and future generations.”

His expertise is further highlighted by his direct influence on public health policy. His research findings have led to the development of new guidelines for the use of antibiotics in livestock, adopted by the Nigerian Ministry of Agriculture. These guidelines represent a significant step forward in controlling the misuse of critical antibiotics in farming, thereby helping to curb the spread of resistant bacteria.

Moreover, Akinsuyi’s dedication to advancing microbiological knowledge extends beyond his research endeavors. He actively engages in community outreach programs and educational initiatives aimed at raising awareness about antimicrobial resistance and promoting responsible antibiotic use.

Through workshops, seminars, and public lectures, Akinsuyi shares his expertise with healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the general public, empowering them to take proactive measures in the fight against AMR.

Akinsuyi emphasizes the importance of education and public engagement in combating antimicrobial resistance.

“It is imperative that we equip individuals with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions regarding antibiotic use. By fostering a culture of responsibility and stewardship, we can mitigate the spread of antimicrobial resistance and preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics for future generations,” he said.

His proactive stance and insightful analysis underscore his unwavering commitment to advancing microbiological knowledge and addressing emerging public health challenges .

Akinsuyi’s multifaceted contributions to research, education, and policy demonstrate his unparalleled dedication to improving public health outcomes in Nigeria and beyond.
