BENIN—NO fewer than three persons were allegedly killed between Tuesday night and the early hours of yesterday in cult-related clashes in Benin city, Edo State capital.
The new development coming on the heels of the alleged killings of eight persons in different locations in Benin, weekend, was confirmed by the Edo State Police Command.
According to the spokesman of the state Police Command, Chidi Nwabuzor, a 19-year-old boy, Godspower Edobor, was killed at Omozeghian street, off Okhoro road, in the early hours of yesterday.
It was, however, gathered that two others were killed at different locations in Benin metropolis.
The PPRO said several arrests have been made in connection with the killings although he did not specify the number of persons in police custody.
He said: “Killings from clashes by rival cult groups have continued unabated in Edo State. The renewed clashes between the cult groups have claimed several lives and the Police is aware of it and adequate security measures have been put in place.
“Just yesterday, there was a joint security raiding of criminal hideouts and black spots. This raiding is geared towards making the state free of cult killings.
“So far, we have recorded incidents where lives were lost. One was at Odemwingie Hotel, around Upper Sakponba. And this morning(yesterday), we heard of a boy of 19 years, who was killed around Okhoro area.
“Several deaths have been recorded, but I cannot give you the exact number now.”
