Nigerian table tennis super star, Aruna Quadri, yesterday, won the 2018 ITTF Challenge Nigeria Open in Lagos, defeating his French opponent, Anthony Hacherd.
At the final played at the Train Balogun Stadium, Surulere, the Nigerian number one table tennis player came from a set down to win four sets to three at 13-11, 3-11, 11-8, 7-11, 5-11, 7-11.
Aruna, who was eliminated during last year’s event at the quarter final also lost the first set of this year’s encounter but rallied back to level up and eventually won the game.
Reacting to his victory, Aruna disclosed that but for the vociferous fans at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall who urged him on, he would have lost the encounter to his opponent. “The chants from fans boosted my morale during the match,” he said.
“I trained very hard before the tournament to ensure that I didn’t disappoint my fans. It would have been annoying and disappointing if I failed my fans that have come from far and wide to support me during this tournament. “And you can see their attitude all through the match. They did not relent in their effort to spur me even when I lost points, they kept supporting me and that means a lot to me. “
Reacting, the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, who witnessed the match live hinted that the victory of Aruna further strengthened his desire towards sports developments in Lagos.
