The role call last week at the announcement of the forthcoming week-long centenary celebrations of the life, times and works of Sheik Adam Abdullahi El-Ilory, attested to the greatness of the founder of the foremost Arabic and Islamic Centre, Markaz in Agege,Lagos.

The President of the alumni association, Dr.  Yusuph Kolawole Jumah led other great members like Professor Issa Abubakar, Professor Abubakar Shuaib, Professor Badmus Yusuff, Dr. Hamzat Ishola, Sheik Yaqub Abdulahi, Alhaji Femi Abbas and Professor Murtada Aderemi Bidmus, to unveil the plans for the celebration billed for April 15 and 21, 2018.

Dr. Jumah said the testimonies of those who had worked on the life achievements of the founder  indicated Al-Ilory was a bridge builder, who contributed significantly to the advancement of Arabic and Islamic studies, and  impacted on their thinking and academic pursuits.

Dr Badmus said the centenary celebration is not a celebration of the birth or death of the great Islamic reformer, but, “It’s a recognition of his intellectual legacies.”

He added: “our celebration of this iconic scholar is to honour our glorious past, in the light of his colossal contributions to the progress of the human race; this event is also to celebrate our prosperous present and prepare for a robust future.

Dr Badmus said the theme of the celebration is  Moving Nigeria to Greatness through the works of Al-Ilory , with sub-themes: War Against Corruption and Indiscipline in Nigeria; Security and peaceful co-existence for Nigeria’s development and the Importance of education and politics for development of Nigeria.

He also disclosed that the program of activities will include colloquium, academic paper presentation, short Arabic drama presentation as well as recognition of deserving Nigerians and  non-Nigerians for their outstanding roles in advancing the cause of Arabic and Islamic scholarship Al-Ilory lived for.

Two alumni of Markaz, the Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede and Prof. Rasaq Deremi Abubakar, former Vice Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University Ilorin and current Commissioner, Public Complaints Commission in Osun State are expected speakers at the event.

Others expected at the week-long event, according to Badmus, include President Muhammadu Buhari, Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki and Hon. Justice M. A. Belgore, the Sultan of Sokoto; Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari; Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi; Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, governors of Ogun, Lagos and Kwara states.
