The Police Commissioner in Imo, Mr Chris Ezike, has directed policemen in the Command to respond to distress calls within five minutes.
Ezike gave the charge at the Police headquarters in Owerri on Wednesday while presenting to newsmen the corpses of two suspected armed robbers shot dead by the police.
He was represented by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Andrew Enwerem.
He said operatives of the Federal Special Anti Robbery Squad (FSARS) in compliance with the directive, busted a 5-man robbery gang in Ezi-Ogbaku in Mbaitoli Local Government Area at 2 a.m. on Wednesday.
The commissioner said the robbers opened fire on the police, resulting in exchange of gunfire which led to the death of two of them.
“Operatives of Federal SARS got a distress call that armed robbers were operating in Ezi-Ogbaku and moving from house to house, and within five minutes they arrived at the scene.
“The robbers on sighting the police engaged them in a gun duel and in the process two of them were killed while the other three escaped with gunshot wounds,” he said.
Ezike said the robbers had yet to be identified and assured that investigations were ongoing to apprehend the remaining three fleeing suspects.
He said one locally made double barrel short gun, two expended cartridges and two live cartridges were recovered from the robbers.
