POPULAR social media platform Facebook, stunned Nigerian businessmen last week when it initiated a council for Startups and Small and Medium Enterprises, SMEs in Nigeria. This is what the small businesses have been yearning to have either from the government or many large business organisations scattered all over Nigeria.
But it took a social media cum technology company headquartered in the US to kick start it. Facebook said that apart from being part of its continuing bid to boost small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Africa, Nigerian SME Council had to berth due to the volume of business traffic heading towards the Nigerian space.
Facebook’s SMB Sales Manager for EMEA, Abi Williams, noted that with 35 million people in other countries connected to a Nigerian business on Facebook, the global market has never been closer to any other business environment than Nigeria.
The Nigerian SME Council is designed to bring together Facebook Africa’s SME team and Nigerian business owners from a range of industries, in a partnership to provide better digital tools for business and customer growth.
The Council is made up of a combination of 15 small-to-medium sized business owners in different sectors and locations across Nigeria, including Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Enugu.
Explaining the reason Facebook embarked on the initiative, Williams said: “Small businesses form the backbone of most of the thriving economies in the world, driving sustainable growth and creating jobs, and those in Nigeria are no different.
Facebook is strategically positioned to help SMEs grow their businesses, and with a vibrant SME sector, Nigeria becomes a natural choice in launching our very first SME Council on the African continent. With 35 million people in other countries connected to a Nigerian business on Facebook, the global market has never been closer for Nigerian SMEs.”
