Abubakar scores PDP low in opposition role

By Dirisu Yakubu

ABUJA —Former Military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), has chided the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for not doing enough to provide a credible opposition in the politics and governance of the country in the last two years.

Abubakar stated this, yesterday, while receiving Chief Raymond Dokpesi, at his Minna residence.

Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar,retd.

Dokpesi  was on a courtesy visit to the former Head of State as part of his ongoing consultation in his bid to vie for the national chairmanship of the party in the December elective convention.

While stressing that no political party was capable of remaining in power forever, Abubakar said all parties, whether in power or not, should remember that service to the people was the primary reason for seeking political power at electioneering periods.

He said: “I must say it is very sad that you have not played your role properly in opposition. Maybe you are still suffering from the shock of defeat, but I thought at least six months down the line it would have been enough to come out of the shock to really face the governance.”

Earlier in his remarks, Dokpesi said though he was yet to formally declare his ambition, he came to seek Abubakar’s blessings and support ahead of the convention.

He said: “My group and I believe in the unity, stability and indivisibility of Nigeria. We believe in a united Nigeria and in harnessing the efforts and the dreams of our heroes like you.”
