Lagos—A 52-year-old man, Simon Ibeh, was, yesterday, arraigned before a Lagos magistrate’s court sitting at Igbosere, Lagos, over alleged issuance of a N5 million dud cheque to one Ezeh Osei.
The defendant, who is facing a count charge, was docked before Magistrate B. A. Sonuga.
The prosecutor, Inspector A. O. Fadipe, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence on October 10, 2016, in Surulere area of Lagos State.
He said the defendant issued the dud cheque with the intention to defraud Mr. Osei Fadipe, and that when the cheque was presented at the bank for payment, it was dishonoured on the grounds that there was no fund in the defendant’s account.
According to the prosecutor, the offence is punishable under Section 319 (a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge against him. His counsel, Helen Ibeji, urged the court to grant the defendant bail in the most liberal term.
Consequently, Magistrate Sonuga granted the defendant N2 million bail, with two sureties in like sum.
He said the residential addresses of the sureties must be verified and adjourned the case till September 19, for mention.
