BY PETER DURU, MAKURDI
Benue state was, last Sunday, thrown into a sombre-mood when news of the assassination of Dr. Tavershima Adyorough, the Principal Special Assistant to the Benue state Governor on Knowledge Economy and Investments filtered into town.
The shock was understandable; the heinous murder was the second time an appointee of the government was killed in a questionable circumstance.
Crime Guard recalls that another close aide of the State governor, Mr Denen Igbana, Senior Special Assistant on Special Security, was, few months ago, assassinated under mysterious circumstances by armed men allegedly led by the wanted militant leader, Terwase Agwaza also known as “Gana.” Dr Adyorough was murdered in his house while he was with his wife and daughter.
Invasion of his house
Investigations revealed that the assailants besieged his BIPC, Nyiman Quarters residence at about 12:30am. According to the account of a close family member, “the two armed men scaled the dwarf perimeter fence of his house. His wife, who is a leader of women prayer group in Makurdi town, was at the time reading her Bible in the sitting room when she noticed that the armed men had broken into the house.
“She immediately dashed into the bedroom to alert her husband who was busy reading his books. At that point, the invaders started shouting ‘where is the money, bring the money. It was then that Dr. Adyorough, armed with a club, was said to have hid himself behind the bedroom door. But the invaders forced their way into the bedroom and Dr. Adyorough smashed the head of the first person that stepped into the room.
“At that point a member of the gang opened fire on him, shooting him twice on the chest and neck.
Believing that the gang members were out to kill her helpless husband, his wife fell on her motionless husband, asking that they either spare him or kill both of them. At that moment, they shot his wife on her arm and leg after which they left them in a pool of blood and fled without taking anything from the house.”
Daughter raises alarm
Meanwhile, immediately the attackers left, the couple’s teenage daughter who hid in one of the rooms while the operation lasted reportedly dashed out of the house, shouting for help from neighbours. It was learned that their neighbours later called the police. On arrival, detectives were said to have swiftly moved the victims to a hospital where Dr. Adyorough who had lost much blood, was confirmed dead while his wife who also lost blood and passed out, was revived after several blood infusions.”
Crime Guard gathered that Dr. Adyorough, an America-trained Economist, lived in the United States of America for about 30 years where he was a one- time President of the Mutual Union of Tiv in America, MUTA. “He only came back to Nigeria about six years ago to assist Governor Samuel Ortom in the task of governance,” our source said.
In his reaction to the heinous murder, Mr. Abraham Adyorough, bewildered elder brother of the deceased stated that the family was not suspecting anyone in the murder. Abraham who fought back tears as he spoke said, “Our family is still in shock over this astonishing incident. My younger brother had no issues with anybody, he had no political ambition, he only came to Benue from America to help the state develop its economy and this is how it ended, just like a dream.
“Though we did not live with him in Makurdi, everyone knew him as a complete gentle man. At the moment, we cannot tell who and why he was killed. We are pleading with security agencies to help the government fish out those responsible for the murder of our brother.”
Gov. Ortom reacts
Reacting to the unfortunate incident, the Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom urged security agencies to immediately apprehend the assailants. In a statement issued Sunday in Makurdi by the Chief Press Secretary, CPS, to the Governor, Mr. Terver Akase, Governor Ortom condemned the murder, describing it as dastardly and unacceptable.
Lamenting the killing, the Governor implored security agencies to swing into action immediately to arrest those responsible for the act. He also urged those with useful information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible to make same available to security agencies.
Injured wife survives
Meanwhile, wife of the deceased Mrs. Mlumum Adyorough, who is fast recuperating after undergoing surgery from the bullet wounds she sustained in the attack was, yesterday, said to be asking of the whereabouts of her husband. Mrs. Adyoroug who was visited at the hospital by members of the State Executive Council, led by the Deputy Governor Mr. Benson Abounu, was in tears after coming out of coma. She was reported to have constantly asked the Deputy Governor, “I hope my husband is fine, I hope my husband is fine? Responding, the Deputy Governor each time said, “he is fine, he is fine.” Mrs Adyororough further asked the Deputy Governor, “I hope the attackers are not political thugs?”
Deputy Gov laments
Speaking to reporters later, Mr. Abounu said, ‘’My first reaction was that of shock in the sense that, this killing is wicked act, atrocious and has no meaning whatsoever. This was a gentleman who was loved by everybody, completely apolitical and never raised his voice against anybody and so, honestly, we are completely caught off-guard. Nobody can even tell you now that this was the reason for this act and that is why as a government, we have given instructions to security agencies to make sure that they spread their dragnets and unravel the mystery behind this killing.
We want to know what the motive was because as of now, we are completely at a loss. But as a government, I can tell you that we will not rest on our oars and we are going to do everything possible to bring this kind of killing to an end.” Abounu assured.
CP Makama reacts
Speaking on the murder, the Benue State Police Commissioner, Mr. Bashir Makama who ordered an immediate investigation to unravel those behind the heinous crime, assured the government and public that the perpetrators would surely be brought to book. Makama said the command received information that about two yet- to -be identified gunmen shot Dr. Adyorough and his wife in their residence at BIPC Quarters Nyiman Makurdi.
“On arrival at the scene, we rushed the couple to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, BSUTH, where the man was confirmed dead while his wife is currently receiving treatment. Five expended cartridges were also recovered from the scene of the crime.” Makama assured that the masterminds will be arrested.
