Delta community women protest over alleged oppression

Ughelli —Women of Eghweya/Emete Iwhrekan community in Ughelli South  Local Government Area of Delta State, yesterday, decried the manner in which contracts and other privileges that accrued to the community from oil firms operating in their area were being hijacked by some individuals.

They  have consequently petitioned the police to tackle the issue before it degenerates to breakdown of law and order.

In the petition addressed to Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, Zone 5, Benin City, obtained  in Warri, Delta State, yesterday, the women specifically mentioned some individuals  as those using all means possible to suppress the wish and aspirations of the people in the community.

But reacting, when contacted, one of those mentioned, dismissed the allegations by the women as false, baseless and unfounded, describing it as a blackmail and a calculated attempt by mischief makers in the community who were envious of his track record of achievements in his private life to tarnish the good name he had built over the years.

The petition by Mrs. Siaka  Oghogho, Mrs. Brumere Djakpa, Mama Aluke Gbemre and Mrs. Patricia Edore, alleged that many of their children, especially youths opposed to the individuals agenda in the community have been unlawfully detained and punished by the police as a result of the false allegation made against them.

The women recalled that “on July 1, 2017, a woman in the community led seven women to carry out a protest on behalf of the women against NPDC/ND Western Ltd Operational base at Utorogu gas plant to demand recognition of one Mr. Clever Wiskel as Chairman of Iwhrekan community against the court order to seek contract.

“In view of the action of the women, a meeting of the women was called and its was resolved that the women that took part in the illegal protest should be sanctioned by disassociation as the traditional way of disciplining offender by the women.

“Consequent upon the resolution announcement by the women in the community, the women that embarked on the illegal protest came with fully loaded thugs harassed innocent women of the community and they have been threatening us since then,” the women said in the petition.
