lAs Senate urges FG to immotalise Maitama Sule

KANO— Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, in Kano warned those advocating division of the country to tread the path of caution.

Obasanjo, who gave the warning while condoling with the state government and the people of Kano over the death of late diplomat, Danmasanin Kano, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule, insisted that Nigeria was a country where everyone was a stakeholder.

He said: “I want to advise that the thought of a divisible Nigeria should disappear from the conscience of such agitators. Nigerians need to learn from the maturity exhibited by Yusuf Maitama Sule, during his life time.”

The former President spoke on a day the Senate asked the Federal Government to name a monument after Alhaji Maitama Sule.

Speaking further, Obasanjo said: “Nigeria is a land of prosperity, a land where Nigerians must continue to learn from each other, live in peace and be their brother’s keeper.

Meanwhile, the Senate, yesterday, asked the Federal government to name a monument after Alhaji Maitama Sule and observed a minute silence in his honour.

The resolutions of the Senate were sequel to a motion by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (APC, Kano Central) and entitled, “Demise of Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule (Danmasanin Kano).

In his remarks, former Kano State governor, Senator Kabiru Gaya, who thanked Senate President Bukola Saraki for his visit to Kano State, said the people of Kano State appreciated his presence.

On his part, Senator Jibrin Barau rendered his tribute to the late Maitama Sule.

Similarly, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, said: “I want to pay condolence to the people of Nigeria for the loss, he was an individual that preached peace and unity of Nigeria.”

Also, Senator Shehu Sani, urged  Nigerians to take lessons from Late Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule’s livelihood for the betterment of the country.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, said:   “He was truly a talented man and every moment with him gave a good lesson”
