How over 500 escaped hardship to enjoy free education in Imo

Owerri—Over 500 parents from Ntueke and Ogwume communities in Ideato South Local Government Area of Imo State have been lifted off the burden of paying N3,000 development levy for their children to merit the free education of Governor Rochas Okorocha.

Vanguard, yesterday, visited the traditional rulers of the two communities, who confirmed that one of their sons, Mr. Johnpaul Ochemba, came to their rescue.

According to the traditional ruler of Ntueke ancient kingdom, HRH. Eze Kyrian Uchenna Ebili, who described it as a “biggest relief” said it came to them at a time parents were battling with the present economic challenges in the country.

Narrating how it happened, he said: “Our son, whom we are proud of, invited us to his house, two communities in Ideato South Local Government Area, Ntueke and Ogwume.

“In that meeting, he said he discovered that some parents were not able to pay N3,000 development levy for their children to enjoy Imo free education. And as a result of this, he  invited us to assist parents pay the development levy for everybody including those who were not in that meeting.

“Immediately, he gave us the money and equally asked those who have paid to go back to their traditional rulers and collect back their money. We are excited. Parents have been relieved of their burdens.”

Contacted, Johnpaul Ochemba said: “You must not be in government before you help your people. What I have done is about conscience and my God.

“If you want to help people, you help them. It is different from when you want to genuinely empower your people.  What interests me is  what I can do for my people to reduce the level of their hardships. What I have done is driven by passion.”
