ABUJA-TRAGEDY has struck the family of former Minister of Information and National Orientation, Chief John Odey, on New Year’s Eve.
Odey who left Abuja for Calabar, Cross River State, to celebrate the New Year with his family meet his elder sister, Mrs Helen Odey, sick but was rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH, where she later died on Saturday December 31, 2016, at about 3:30am.
Odey who did not mention the kind of sickness that killed his elder sister fondly called ‘Aunty Helen’ said that, “Thank God, we have seen the last day in 2016. Unfortunately, my elder sister, Helen Odey, who was sick, could not cross over with us into the New Year.
“She passed on to eternal glory this morning (Saturday) in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH, in Calabar by 3.30am. Please join me to pray for the repose of her soul. She was 58 years before she left us today.
“This is a tragedy to us and we are really pained with this incident but I believe God knows best because it is part of our existence on earth.”
The late Helen was a trained nurse, an educationist, patriotic community mobiliser and devoted Christian who dedicated her life towards betterment of lives of people around her.
Until her demise, she was a nurse with the Model Secondary School, Okpoma, Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State. She left behind a daughter and two sons. Her last son currently an assistant lecturer in University of Calabar
