Lagos—A couple, John and Evelyn Onah, and one other were, yesterday, arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, for allegedly using a forged document to defraud a Lagos-based hotel.
They were docked alongside their friend, Simon Achanya, 40, on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, fraud, forgery, malicious damage, and stealing.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Innocent Odugbu, informed the court that the defendants committed the alleged offences between January and March 2016, at Plot 5, Acme Road, off Lateef Jakande Road, Agindingbi, Ikeja, Lagos.
Odugbu said the defendants got a proposal to manage a Lagos-based hotel, Cozy World Hotels Ltd., Ikeja, under false pretences.
He said that they forged documents with an unregistered company’s name, Global Reach Ltd., to gain access to manage the said hotel.
“The name of the company, which the defendants submitted to enable them manage Cozy World Hotel, was not registered by the Corporate Affairs Commission,” Odugbu said.
He said that the defendants stole and maliciously damaged some properties belonging to the hotel when they were managing it.
Odugbu alleged that the items stolen included, cutleries, air conditioner gas cylinder, towels, curtains and drinking glasses, adding that the items damaged were refrigerators, intercoms and doors.
Others are plumbing fittings, water heaters, furnitures and DSTV cables.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the offences preferred against them.
The magistrate, Mr. B. A. Sonuga, granted them bail in the sum of N5 million each with two sureties each in like sum; sureties must be gainfully employed.
He also said that the defendants must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government and adjourned the case till February 14 for mention.
