The unionist turned politician seeking to trudge the path taken by the outgoing governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole comes across as smart and savvy. Indeed, he exudes confidence in exciting measures maybe because the incumbent was like him a successful unionist, whatever that means. Whether as the President of Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PEGASSAN, or President-General of Trade Union Congress, Peter Esele, endeared himself to many with his intellect and pragmatic views on national concerns.

The spark and spoof that had been characteristic of the politics of Anambra State was on a hiatus for the eight years Mr. Peter Obi was governor. In that time, the political trouble makers understandably went underground. With Obi’s departure, the kind of adventurous political satire that the state had been reputed may well be returning. Last weekend’s Supreme Court judgment sacking the Prince Kenneth Emekayi led executive of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP is the undisputable fact that Anambra politics is again returning to the confusion that it had been well noted for. In its place, the apex court affirmed the supremacy of the rival Chief Ejike Oguebego led executive putatively led by Chief Chris Uba.

It was the first time in memorable history that nearly all living former governors of Ogun State were gathered at the very spot from where they had at various times dictated the pace and pattern of governance of the state. Even more remarkable last Monday was the presence of the first governor of the state, Major General Seidu Balogun who governed the state at the same time that the then Lt. Col. Muhammadu Buhari was also called upon to become governor of the then Northeast State.

ONE of the leading governorship aspirants in Edo State, Barr Kenneth Imansuagbon, does not see the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, stopping his All Progressives Congress, APC, from retaining the state when Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s tenure ends in November. However, to make victory certain, he has urged leaders of the APC to ensure free and fair primaries so that the best candidate will emerge as its standard bearer.

It happened so suddenly. It was the least of the things he ever thought could happen to him or anyone he knew closely. So he was not prepared for what his reaction could be. Let me start with a personal story. At a point in my life, I ignored the church like many youths in their 20s still do. It’s the rebel in us that wants to break away from the sermons and doctrines that we have been force-fed with in childhood and adolescence especially those who have attended mission schools. I opted for squash, Sunday luncheons, social visits, movies or simply to sleep off Saturday night hang overs. It didn’t help that I was in a profession that did not see Sunday as a hallowed day. But habits and characters formed in childhood are difficult to completely shake off and the lure of the church became stronger as I grew older.

I live in a face-to face apartment in a crowded compound. People don’t seem to mind their business here. I cannot have privacy even though I live in two rooms.
