Centre for Happy Elderly People, CHEP, a non-governmental organisation which specializes in giving care to the elderly citizens, has described old age as ablessing.
This came as the organisation celebrated 10 years of its existence.
Speaking, Mrs Lilian Jiringho, the coordinator of the centre, who disclosed that taking care of the elderly citizens was a revelation she received 10 years ago, said the organisation engaged in services such as meeting the physical and social needs of the elderly, healthcare and welfare, management and creation of an alternative home for the elderly.
While encouraging young people to support the elderly, Mrs. Jiringho said patience was key to dealing with the elderly, advising that anyone who had an encounter with an elderly person should be tolerant.
According to her: “Old age is a blessing to humanity. The elderly people are vulnerable to age related diseases. It is everybody’s business to take care of the elderly as we would also need similar care when we also grow old. Who ever decides to take care of the elderly, reserves a special blessing for him or herself”
Listing some of the challenges of the organisation, she declared that it needed support especially finance from the government, well meaning Nigerians to adequately accommodate and improve on the welfare for the elderly.
