A police Sergeant of the Human Rights Department, Meiran Police Station, Area 10, Eyo Glory, has told Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye of a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja, how a 29-year-old mechanic, Niyi Oyelami, raped a nine-year-old girl (names withheld).

Led in evidence by the prosecution lawyer, B. T. Boye, the witness said: “On May 2, 2015, I was on night duty at the station when the complainant (victim’s mother) came to report a case of defilement against Niyi.

“The complainant reported that she went to buy biscuits for her children. On her way back, she heard her daughter crying. On getting to where her voice was coming from, which is her neighbour’s (the suspect) house, she saw him helping her daughter to wear her pant.

“However, she took her daughter to her room and asked her what happened and the victim said that Brother Niyi removed her pant, put her on a bench and put his penis in her vagina.”

When the victim’s mother took off her pant, she saw injuries and bloodstains, she raised alarm and other neighbours came and asked the defendant what happened. He told them he did not know what came over him.

In her evidence before the court, Dr. Abubakar Medina, a medical practitioner in Orile General Medical Centre, Department of Paediatrics and OPD, informed the court: “I examined the victim and there was no bruise, no laceration but the hymen was broken.

“I gave the medical report as my findings.”

Meanwhile, Niyi Oyelami, who pleaded not guilty was arraigned on a one-count charge bordering on unlawful sexual intercourse contrary to Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, made against him by the government of Lagos State.
