The Federal Government has been tasked to take steps to ensure that opportunities in the agriculture value chain were unlocked as the government pursues its diversification agenda.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc, Mrs Sola David-Borha, who made the call at the bank’s 2016 Business Leadership Series with theme, “Gems in the Field”, in Lagos, said the goal, if well executed, would turn Nigeria into a global agricultural powerhouse.
She said: “You are all aware of the story about increasing effect of agriculture on our economy. Agriculture could create three million jobs across the entire value chain; it could drive export and the much needed foreign exchange. And so, for me, I think the new challenge for us is unlocking the opportunities in agriculture in the execution of it and making everything we all talk about a reality so that agriculture is really firing on all its cylinders. The sector and its value chain have the potential to create millions of jobs.”
In his presentation, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, assured of the ministry’s readiness to work with private sector operators in changing the face of agriculture in Nigeria.
He said: “We are ever ready to collaborate with the private sector where necessary. Also, the agriculture transformation agenda of the government is still top on the agenda for the government.”
