Residents in fear over harassment by thugs

By Evelyn Usman

Residents of   Green Field estate in Amuwo Odofin  Local Government Area  of Lagos, are presently gripped with fear, following  invasion by thugs allegedly hired by an aggrieved resident to harass  some of them.

This is coming on the heels of a resolution reportedly passed three weeks ago,  by the estate’s  Landlord/Tenants association, to relieve its chairman of his position, over issues bothering on alleged financial misappropriation..

However, Saturday Vanguard  gathered that the decision was reached  while the chairman, Mr Nixon  Okwara, was away in the United States of America.

A caretaker committee was thereafter,  set up with a charge  to oversee the affairs of the estate for six months and also  to conduct an election that will herald  a new chairman and executive members.

But since the decision for Okwara to leave was reached,  residents alleged that he had been  hiring some thugs to harass some of them.

Speaking with Saturday Vanguard’, the Chairman, Caretaker committee, Mr Emmanuel Okeke  who confirmed the harassment by thugs said, “ Our estate   comprises the  Yorubas, Hausas, Igbos and  other tribes. For the past six years he  has been the chairman, he has no account.  Each time he is asked to render account to the general house, it would result into a fight.

He was asked  to allow another person assume the position of  the chairman last year but he refused. Landlords therefore came together on September 3, 2016 and passed a vote of no confidence on him, following allegations levelled against him.

Since then, he has been fomenting trouble by trying to instigate quarrel between landlords and has also sent thugs to beat up landlords. in the estate. He said nobody can do anything to him. It is obvious that policemen at the Ago division have compromised because when incident of the attack by  the thugs he personally led occurred,  I ran to the police station to report but no decisive action was taken”.

Saturday Vanguard was informed that a near clash was averted Wednesday after a group of thugs invaded the estate to attack some of the landlords.
