An unidentified commercial motorcyclist, popularly known as okada was yesterday hit by a commercial bus driver at Berger Yard Bus stop along the ever busy Oshodi/Apapa Expressway, Apapa, Lagos. The okada man died on the spot while his male passenger, who was said to have sustained minor injuries, was rushed to a private hospital at Kirikiri, where he is presently receiving treatment.
Eyewitnesses told Saturday Vanguard that the incident occurred at about 2:30pm, when the okada man, heading towards Mile 2 on high speed, suddenly turned to fast land from the service lane, close to the main gate of Julius Berger (Nig.) PLC, while the driver of the bus, popularly known as danfo, and also heading to Mile 2, smashed into the okada, knocking off both the okada man and his passenger. It was alleged that the danfo driver had immediately sped off to avoid the wrath of other okada men.
When Saturday Vanguard arrived at the scene, the corpse of the deceased was lying covered with leaves on the median close to the accident spot, while policemen from Area B of the Nigerian Police, Kirikiri, Apapa were controlling and calming protesting okada men, who had vented their anger on other danfo drivers plying the road, smashing windscreens.
