ABUJA—THE Senate has begun the process of establishing a National Poverty Eradication Commission to provide a database of all issues relating to poverty in the country.
Speaking, yesterday, at a Joint Public Hearing on a Bill for an Act to Establish National Poverty Eradication Commission, organised by Joint Committees on Poverty Alleviation and Social Welfare, National Planning and Economic Affairs, President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, said the bill, which the upper chambers considered very important, would help end a major problem in the country.
Represented at the opening of the public hearing by the Senate Chief Whip, Olusola Adeyeye, Saraki noted that the commission would help to address and eradicate poverty in the country.
Saraki said: “We should contribute in an interactive manner towards strengthening the provisions and discuss flaws or loopholes that may exist in this critical piece of legislation.
“The Senate considers the bill as one of its priority pieces of legislation because it aims to put an end to an issue that many Nigerians suffer from daily.”
