Just when Benue farmers were beginning to enjoy some respite from the incessant attacks by Fulani herdsmen, the dear-devil marauders struck again last Friday night at Tarfi village, Binnev Ward in Buruku local government area of the state, and in their usual fashion killed scores, injuring many and razing down houses and several property. The Buruku massacre came on the hills of a similar incident at Agatu where over 500 were killed and Tse Tia village in Tarka local government area, where the youth leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr. Aondohemba Kasa and three others were also butchered in cold blood.

Though stakeholders are divided over the impact of the fuel price hike on the Nigerian economy in the medium to long term, it is however, a general consensus that in the short term, the effect of the hike on the economy would be unpleasant and near disastrous. In the wake of the hike, the Federal Government and other stakeholders had stated that the new price would bring temporary hardship on Nigerians, stating that it is a bitter pill that everyone must swallow for the country to survive difficult times and move forward.

Many boisterous and healthy debates have broken out on social media platforms and, indeed, other fora on the recently adjusted price of petrol. But quite unexpectedly, some of the arguments are grounded in myths. Here are a few and my attempt to burst them.

The fact-finding and reconciliation team set up by the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Prince Olagusoye Oyinlola, to resolve the crisis in the APC in Edo State, arrived penultimate Thursday and held their first meeting with Governor Adams Oshiomhole. Other members of the delegation included Hajia Fatima Muhammed, a member of the Board of Trustees (BOT); Alhaji Ahmed Abdulahi, Prince Martins Bisong, Senator Osita Izunaso and Senator Ndoma Egba. Their mandate was to unravel the cause of the dispute between Oshiomhole and his deputy, Dr Pius Odubu and also find lasting solution to the crisis which had engulfed the party ahead of the September 10 governorship election in the state.

How the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP came to its present distress would surely confound the likes of Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, a former national chairman of the party. In 2008, Ogbulafor had bragged that the party would rule the country for 60 straight years. Besides being shoved from the pedestal of power, the party is today at the point of disintegration.

“But we want you public to know that despite the heavy presence of military operatives, our activities can’t be stopped and it is just waste of fund and time to let the Nigeria military protect oil installations,” the militants added. The big-headed statement noticeably irked the authorities as a miffed President Muhammadu Buhari gave orders to the security agencies to crush the rampaging militants barely 24 hours after.
