Beko’s anniversary focuses on nation’s democracy

LAGOS—TEN years after the death of the late human rights activist, Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, associates and friends have concluded plans to hold anniversary lectures in honour of the late pro-democracy activist.

The events which would be convened by different groups on February 10, 2016 in Lagos would be a platform for Nigeria’s democracy to be mirrored in the light of the contributions of the late Beko to the enthronement of democratic rule.

In a chat with Vanguard the wife of the deceased Mrs. Abosede Ransome-Kuti said that a youth soccer competition was held yesterday in honour of Beko, adding that all activities in remembrance of the deceased are being organised by human rights and pro-democracy groups.

Vanguard gathered that the Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin-led Campaign for Democracy would hold its gathering at the Beko Memorial Cenotaph while a similar one by the Beko Kuti Memorial Anniversary Committee would take place at Airport Hotel on same date.

The Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode and a former governor of the state are among expected guests at the Airport Hotel lecture which is entitled:  Sustaining Nigeria’s Democracy: The Realities,The Challenges and the Prospects.

It was further gathered that a Prof of Political Science at the Delta State University, Prof Sunny Akpotor would be the guest speaker while the event would be chaired by the Vice Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Okada.
