Electoral officer caught with ballot materials

By Nwabueze Okonkwo

ONITSHA — The police in Anambra State have arrested the Electoral Officer in charge of Onitsha North Local Government Area, Mrs Cecilia Arinze, for allegedly sneaking into her officer with the help of her security man and removing electoral materials on Easter day, a work -free day.

Luck was said to have ran out on the woman when the security men at the council headquarters refused to allow her pass through the gate unless she gave good reasons for removing the materials on Easter day when nobody was in the council.

Consequently, a heated argument ensued between her and the security men which resulted in the security operatives alerting the council chairman, Douglas Egbuna, who rushed to the scene to also inform the state chairman of All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, Chief Mike Kwentor, and Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka, APGA trustee, who stormed the council on the development.

In her defence, the Electoral Officer told them that she was merely taking the materials, result sheets of the recently concluded presidential and NASS elections to Awka, state capital, as directed by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner.

On why she was doing that on Easter day, she said:  “I don’t come with my car to evacuate them so I have to use public transport .

‘’These are used documents; they are duplicate copies of the conducted presidential and NASS election result sheets held on the March 28, 2015. So, I am taking them to Awka as directed by the REC.”

Reacting, APGA trustee, Ezeonnwuka declared: “This development is a clear manifestation of how APGA was rigged out   in the state by PDP, police and the the soldiers.
