OSOGBO—hoodlums suspected to be hired political thugs, weekend, in Ilase, Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State, attacked the convoy of Governor Rauf Aregbesola while on campaign tour of the area.

Aregbesola had gone to Ibokun and Ilase to campaign for candidates on the platform of All Progressives Congress, APC, when his campaign train was attacked.

During the pandemonium that ensued, several APC members were said to have received various degrees of injuries, while posters of the party’s contestants, its flags and the podium on which the governor was to address the gathering were also damaged.

The hoodlums also fired gun shots into the air to scare the waiting APC crowd before destroying flags, posters and the campaign podium. It was further gathered that a female member of APC had her ear slashed off and she was rushed to an undisclosed hospital.

It was learnt that when Governor Aregbesola returned to the campaign ground, he was shocked by what he saw, describing it as callous and condemnable.

He, therefore, called on security agencies to investigate what he described as unprovoked attack and called on the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, “to desist from the ignoble act.”

Meanwhile, the APC in the state has warned the PDP that it will not profit from impunity in its resort to violence in the run-up to the March 28 and April 11, presidential and general elections, because, “there will be consequences locally and internationally.”

In a statement made available to the media in Osogbo, yesterday, the APC said: “The murderous nature of PDP violence in several APC states of the federation is clear evidence of desperation borne out of the frustration that, in spite of everything the PDP has done to douse people’s support for APC, its popularity continues to soar.”
