Fire guts 50 shops in Ogun

About 50 shops and other shanties at Kara Market in Isheri area of Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State were, yesterday, gutted by fire, leaving goods and valuables worth millions of naira destroyed.

Though no life was lost, it was gathered that some people sustained injuries while attempting to put out the fire.

A source said the fire started around 4.30p.m. on Sunday and consumed money, goods and other valuables.

The cause of the mystery fire was yet to be determined at press time.

Vanguard, however, gathered that the fire started from one of the shops in the market.

An eyewitness said: “Money, clothes and goods were consumed in the fire.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, who visited the scene, described the incident as unfortunate.

He has, however, ordered his men to commence investigation and unravel the cause of the inferno.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Muyiwa Adejobi, said: “About 50 shops were razed by fire. We gathered that money, goods and other valuables were lost in the fire disaster, but no life was lost.

“The CP has ordered an investigation into the incident. For now, no one has been able to tell the Police the cause of the fire disaster.”
