FORMER Senate Chief Whip, Senator Roland Owie, has described the calls by Northern Elders Forum, NEF, on President Goodluck Jonathan not to contest the 2015 presidential election, as an insult to the South-South geo-political zone.
He added that NEF lacked regard for the region that produces Nigeria’s wealth, noting that the statement credited to NEF was capable of destroying the unity of the country. He said the Federal Government needs the support of the North to defeat insurgency in the region.
Owie, in a chat with Vanguard yesterday, said that the North has been acting as if it was an abomination for a minority to become the President of Nigeria.
He said: “A once respected NEF, which had people like Professor Ango Abdullahi has now been reduced to a level where gutter languages are used. It is not fair to South-South.
“They ought to have sympathy for the nation that has been together for the past hundred years.”
