THE Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, has warned traditional rulers in Anambra State to stop causing confusion in their communities, warning that the Police would no longer allow a situation where some monarchs instigate crisis in their domains and turn around to blame the Police of bias.
Abubakar, who was in Anambra, weekend, on a security summit organised by the state government blamed the traditional ruler of Oko community, Orumba North local government of Anambra State. Prof. Laz Ekwueme for allegedly fomenting trouble in his community.
While answering question from Igwe Ekwueme on why the police stopped him from holding a meeting in his community, at the summit, the Inspector General said that intelligence report indicated that the “meeting was intended to instigate protest for the removal of a sitting Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Prof.Godwin Onu without police permit”.
He noted, ”That was not a security meeting as you claim and not a peace meeting but we’re mobilising people to come and stage protest against the rector and we can not allow that because the situation may go out of hand. I didn’t want to discuss this matter in public because of the position you occupy but it is a serious matter. I came here with AIG in charge of the zone and other officers. If you want to hold a security meeting as traditional
ruler, you should write the DPO and tell him of your intention. The DPO will provide you with security if your intention is genuine. From information we have, you were calling people to come and stage a protest to remove the rector of Federal Polytechnic Oko. I will discipline any officer who does not respect traditional institution because we need them to work.”
The IG complained specifically about what was happening in Oko where some people were taking laws into their hands by staging protests to remove the rector of the Federal Polytechnic Oko. It would be recalled that the community had split over the call for the removal of the rector, after Mr President, Goodluck Jonathan had renewed his tenure for the next four years, resulting in different protests by the community .
The call has generated crisis between supporters of the rector and that of the monarch in the community culminating in the banishment of 13 indigenes from the community for pitching tent with the rector.
