LAGOS—The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has said its food fortification programme will reduce  micro-nutrient deficiency among Nigerians.

To this end, the Agency has begun large-scale food “Food Fortification Programme”in Lagos. Food Fortification Programme is an intervention by the Federal Government, to enhance the quality of readily available and more affordable foods nutritionally by addition of some vital minerals and vitamins required by the body.

It is also aimed at addressing micro-nutrient deficiency disorders in the country.

Reeling out the milestones recorded  by the Agency in food fortification programmes, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Dr Paul Orhii, lamented that the prevalence of micro-nutrient deficiency among Nigerians was still of public significance.

According to Orhii who was represented by the Director, Food, Safety and Applied Nutrition, Mrs. Ogochukwu Mainasara, the staple diet of the rural poor still lacked the essential nutrients that would enable them live healthy life.
