Faria, Metsu battle for 2013 Glo CAF Legend Award

When the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stages the Glo CAF Awards on January 9, 2014 in Lagos, Nigeria, one of the key awards that will be keenly contested for by veterans of the game in the continent, apart from the African Player of the Year Award, is the Legend Award.

According to CAF, the duo of ex- Coach of Terranga Lions of Senegal, Bruno Metsu and ex-Morocoan International, Mehdi Faria have been shortlisted for the 2013 Glo CAF Legend Award.

The Legend Award recognizes and rewards outstanding ex-footballers, coaches and administrators who have contributed positively to the development of African football in the past.

Bruno Metsu was born in Coudekergue village in Northern France on 28 January, 1954. Metsu sealed his pride of place in African football history when he led Senegal to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan. that he was suffering from cancer,

Mehdi Faria was in charge when the Atlas Lions of Morocco became the first African team to reach the second round in a FIFA World Cup during the 1986 finals in Mexico. After topping their group, the Atlas Lions bowed out to West Germany 1-0 in the round of 16.

Born on April 26, 1933 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Faria arrived in Morocco in the early 80s and was instrumental to the changes in standard and style of football in the Kingdom of Morocco.

He first worked with  Royal Armed Forces ( FAR) of Rabat, with whom  he won, in 1985,  the then  African Cup of Club Champions (now known as CAF Champions League). The following year, he took the Moroccan national team to the 1986 World Cup. He was a former Real Madrid player.

Faria became a naturalised Moroccan and converted to Islam, dropping his first name José and taking up Mehdi. Four days before his death on October 8, 2013, the former Real Madrid and Morocco players honored him in recognition of his work in football.  Faria died in Kenitra, Morocco, at the age of 80.
