60-yr-old driver remanded for manslaughter

LAGOS — A 60-year-old man, Felix Alele, was Wednesday remanded in Kirikiri Prisons over alleged manslaughter.

Magistrate, Miss A.O Akinde, ordered that the defendant be remanded pending the legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP.

The defendant, who resides in DeltaState, is facing a three-count charge bordering on manslaughter and reckless driving.

However, when the charge was read to the defendant, he pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutor, Inspector Chinalu Uwadione, had earlier told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences at 8.30 a.m. on November 12 along Ogunnusi Road, Opposite Babs Fafunwa, Ojodu, Ikeja.

He said that the defendant who is the driver of a Mack truck with registration no, KSF 507 XB, drove dangerously and caused the death of one Collins Afe, 29.

Uwadione, said that the defendant drove carelessly and without consideration by driving the truck over the deceased’s head and killing him.

According to the prosecutor the deceased who was the motorboy to Alele was sent on errand by him, unknown to the defendant, Afe had returned and laid under the truck.

The prosecutor said the offences committed is contrary to Sections 25(a), 28(i) and 36(p), of the Road Traffic Law of the Federation, 2003.

The case was however adjourned to December 10, for mention.
