Police intercept large quantity of explosives in Oyo


IBADAN — THE Oyo State police command has intercepted a large quantity of explosives.

Officials of the command intercepted the vehicle conveying the deadly weapons on Podo-Ijebu-Ode road.

Though the three occupants of the Nissan Sunny marked Ogun XC 863 AKM and painted Ogun State commercial colour escaped, the police were able to seize the explosives.

Briefing newsmen about the seizure yesterday at the state Police headquarters, the Commissioner of Police , Mr. Mohammed Indabawa, said: “On August 11, 2013 at 3.15am, a police patrol team along Podo-Ijebu Ode road, intercepted a taxi with three occupants whom they flagged down but refused to stop and sped off. After a hot chase, the occupants of the vehicle escaped into a nearby busy while the vehicle was abandoned.”

He explained that the explosive items included six cartons of explosive powder, two cartons of solar detonating cords, sixteen bundles of ten wires each of delay detonator wires”.

According to him, the explosives, after investigation, were found to have been stolen from a quarry at toll gate on August 8, 2013 but the police would still investigate the motive behind the movement of the explosives.
